Donald & Shirley Hartlaub

This fund, created by the children of Donald G. & Shirley W. Hartlaub in 2009, was established as an endowment in 2010.

Annual grants are awarded from the fund to Aurora Central Catholic High School.

Donald Hartlaub, Sr. (1921-2009) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was raised in Chicago and was a graduate of St. Patrick High School.

Mr. Hartlaub earned the rank of lieutenant while serving in the United States Navy and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal.

For thirty-five years, Mr. Hartlaub owned and operated Don’s Service Station & U-Haul at the corner of Illinois and Broadway in Aurora.

He was a member of Annunciation Church of Aurora for over fifty years where he was as a lector and member of the Holy Name Society.

He also was appointed to the Education Council of Roncalli and Aurora Central Catholic High Schools.

Shirley Hartlaub (1928-2009) was born in Wheaton, Illinois, and moved to Aurora early in her life.

She was a graduate of East Aurora High School and the Oak Park School of Nursing.

She worked at Oak Park Hospital and for Dr. H.M. DeBartolo, Sr. in Aurora.

Mrs. Hartlaub volunteered at many charitable organizations including the Girl Scouts.

She was a member of Annunciation Church of Aurora for over fifty years and served the parish in many capacities.

Mr. and Mrs. Hartlaub will be remembered for their unwavering devotion to the lives of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

They also will be remembered for their strong support of Catholic education.

It is in this spirit that this fund has been established.

There’s no question in my mind that the scholarship I received opened up possibilities.

…you can always start small, even $25 can make a difference. Remember we can’t take our money with us. Even if it’s just your gift of time. Volunteer and get involved.

Thank you very much for supporting my college education for these four years. I will never be able to repay you for the opportunity that this scholarship has given to me.

Julia H.

[Renewing Scholarship Recipient] Graduate of Hinkley-Big Rock High School

As a first-generation college student from a low-income family, I was worried about how I was going to pay for books and supplies. This scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies instead of worrying about how to afford college. I am working to not only create opportunities for myself but to motivate future generations. Thank you so much for helping me along this journey!

A community foundation is a donor-driven organization that helps donors custom-design funds that reflect their charitable interests. Through the years, grants from these funds have made a significant impact on our local communities.
