The Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley has awarded Family Focus Aurora a $10,000 grant to purchase a new computer server. A new server increases our capacity to serve participants and reach new families.

Family Focus Aurora is a community outreach center of Family Focus, Inc., a not-for-profit social service organization providing supportive services for families and children in Aurora, Cicero, Evanston, Highland Park / Highwood, and the Chicago communities of Englewood, Hermosa, and Lawndale.

Family Focus Aurora is Aurora’s first-ever comprehensive family support center for Spanish-speaking families. It features an extensive arts program for teens and provides the only area after-school program that includes bus transportation.

Family Focus Aurora plays a lead role in the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights’ New Americans Initiative in the Aurora, Joliet, and Elgin areas. Staff provides immigrants seeking citizenship with outreach, civic engagement classes, assistance with citizenship applications, and legal support, in partnership with Centro Cristo Rey and Heartland Alliance’s Midwest Immigrant and Human Rights Center.

Other services include: Developmental screenings for infants and toddlers; supervised developmentally appropriate activities while parents are participating in programs, home visits and drop-in support from trained family support staff, computer training and classes in health, English as a Second Language (ESL), and GED, and referrals and advocacy for community mental health, housing, health care, public aid, and education and job services.

The new server, funded by the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, will enable Family Focus Aurora to better coordinate all of these programs, as well as special projects, such as volunteers for the center’s current Census 2010 Outreach Program.

As a first-generation college student from a low-income family, I was worried about how I was going to pay for books and supplies. This scholarship will allow me to focus more on my studies instead of worrying about how to afford college. I am working to not only create opportunities for myself but to motivate future generations. Thank you so much for helping me along this journey!

A community foundation is a donor-driven organization that helps donors custom-design funds that reflect their charitable interests. Through the years, grants from these funds have made a significant impact on our local communities.
