Sunday is Flag Day – but did you know the “Father of Flag Day” was a dentist who practiced in the Fox River Valley?
Dr. Bernard J. Cigrand (1866-1932) “campaigned tirelessly to have June 14 declared as a special day of observance to honor the United States flag.” In 1916, after an official proclamation from the president, Flag Day was born.
Decades later, in 2003, a Boy Scout took proceeds he collected and created a fund to honor Cigrand, which became an endowment in 2007 thanks to additional donations.
